Analog vs. Digital
It ought to get easier, but it doesn't seem to.
There's a spark, always from something
Outside yourself: a death, a loss, a girl
With some attention to spare. A few
Words from her seem to change everything.
Only a few years ago, you'd have been
Anxiously awaiting letters from each other.
Yours, attempting the offbeat romantic; hers,
Breathless and giddy and illuminated,
If only with hearts on vines.
And it wouldn't matter, would make
No difference if the paper were thin
And par avion, or some thick, lustrous
Bond--only the words, and maybe not even
The words particularly, would matter
Only the fact that someone, somewhere
Wrote this down for you.
