when they first kiss they’re sitting in a cardboard box and there’s a small kitten perched on taekwoon’s lap. they can hear the rain dropping onto, practically smashing into, the box and if they weren’t so caught up in the moment they’d probably be wondering if this box was going to be able to pull through until the storm has passed.
the kitten’s soft purring is soothing and despite taekwoon’s rapidly beating heart he does calm down a little. the kiss, albeit mutual, came unexpectedly, possibly for the both of them. even the usually upbeat and happy hakyeon has fallen silent, even long after they break the kiss and the both of them can’t bear to look at each other, hands still intertwined and it’s only when the kitten crawls over to hakyeon’s lap that he chuckles, though it’s only because it’s licking his hand.
when they lock gazes once more taekwoon attempts to look away but he can feel the grip on his fingers tightening and he’s drawn towards hakyeon’s presence again and before he knows it he’s leaning in and his lips connect with hakyeon as the box continues to fall apart. at some point the box really does fall apart and taekwoon feels like he’s drowning, though the rain isn’t the main cause.
he can feel the raindrops dripping down his cheek and that’s when he realizes they have other concerns right now and he takes off his jacket, draping it over the cat. despite both of them not being allowed to keep a cat -- one of taekwoon’s older sisters is allergic and hakyeon’s landlady doesn’t allow cats-- they run to taekwoon’s house, even though hakyeon isn’t even aware of that yet.
when they arrive they’re soaking wet, rain dripping from every corner of their bodies and the kitten’s the only one that’s ended up still dry. this time taekwoon lets out a chuckle, hakyeon seemingly surprised at the sound and the look of taekwoon’s face when he smiles. today is a day of first times.
they both open their mouths at the same time to say something and they both stop speaking before even finishing their first words, and there’s a silence again before the cat meows and they both look at the animal at the same time.
they’ve been taking care of the little stray, taking turns, at first without even realizing it, but it didn’t take long to discover the almost daily cat treats left there by the other person. it had only been a matter of time until they met.
“t-towel,” taekwoon haphazardly speaks, running upstairs to get one, probably. it’s the first full word he’s managed to utter since their little moment in the cardboard box.
“y-yes. right. thanks,” hakyeon answers, though he’s not sure if taekwoon’s even heard it.
when taekwoon returns he just shoves the towel into hakyeon’s hands even though he’s still dripping wet himself-- he must have forgotten, hakyeon thinks. he drapes the towel over taekwoon’s wet hair and pulls him close using the ends of the towel, lips only milimeters away from each other and for a while, what seems like an eternity, they keep still but when their lips do touch again it’s even worse. time seems to go much slower but they both don’t mind, even if they’re about to catch a cold.
having dried off eventually, they spend the rest of the day in pj’s, covered in blankets, the kitten sleeping in between them-- which is starting to become a habit for the little one. once in a while they look at each other, look away and secretly try to find their way to the other’s hand. it’s like they’re thirteen again, when just holding hands with your crush was the best thing you could possibly imagine.
finally, the storm passed, and the both of them somehow felt disappointed, though they knew they’d be seeing each other again.
“come again,” taekwoon practically vomits, hands curling into fists, “here. come by again.”
“i think i will,” he answers, kitten in his arms. “see you sunday.”
