‘Tangata i Tāngata’ is a collaborative installation that celebrates the vast spectrum of what it means to be a New Zealander. Participants create a personal ‘pepeha tile’ with felt tokens that represent aspects of their identity. These tiles are then placed on the wall alongside other participants’ tiles which together create a national pepeha. This represents New Zealand’s constantly evolving cultural identity.
Our work takes inspiration from the Pepeha and Whakawhānaungatanga frameworks, to help participants find a connection between themselves and the collective. Pepeha is a way of introducing yourself in Māori that acknowledges the people and places you are connected to. Au to Whakawhānaungatanga locates au (self) at the centre of one’s expanding relationship networks.
Our target audience is New Zealanders in the broadest sense - those who were born and bred here, those who have migrated or immigrated, and those who simply call New Zealand home.
