Argentina wins the Davis Cup 2016
Croatia and Argentina met for the Davis Cup final in Zagreb. Croatia, the hosting nation, was looking to win their second Davis Cup crown while Argentina was looking to end years of disappointing results - 4 finals played but has never won the competition.
Both teams sent their best players on court on day one of the action. Croatia’s Marin Cilic gave his team the first point defeating Federico Delbonis in 5 sets. Juan Martin del Potro put his team on level terms after defeating Ivo Karlovic in 4 sets.
On Saturday Marin Cilic and Ivan Dodig put on an amazing performance to defeat Juan Martin Del Potro and Leonardo Mayer 7:6(2) 7:6(4) 6:3 in doubles action to send Croatia into 2:1 lead before Sunday’s deciding matches.
On Sunday both teams put faith in their best players in the singles clash between Cilic and Del Potro. Things looked bleak for Argentina when Juan Martin found himself 0-2 down and on the brink of defeat. But he stayed calm and composed and staged the biggest comeback of his career to defeat Marin in 5 sets - 6:7(4) 2:6 7:5 6:4 6:3 in a thrilling match that lasted almost 5 hours! This victory meant the teams were yet again on level terms 2:2 and the deciding match had to be played to determine the winner.
Croatia’s Ivo Karlovic met with Argentina’s Federico Delbonis. Argentine’s perfect performance proved too much for the experienced Karlovic who was defeated in straight sets 6:3 6:4 6:2
