Team Switzerland win the XXX edition of the Hopman Cup
Roger Federer a.k.a The Swiss Maestro and Belinda Bencic take the trophy for Switzerland , while Angelique Kerber and Alexander Zverev are runners up. The courts in Perth saw a successful fresh start for Kerber in her singles matches, where she didn't drop a set. The former world no.1, who had a very difficult season in 2017 and as a result dropped out the top 20 in WTA rankings.
Roger Federer shows no signs of stopping after his very successful season. In 2017 Roger won two majors, in Melbourne and in London, while Rafa Nadal took home the other two in Paris and in New York. The most important for the Swiss is that he is healthy and well rested. He has been carefully chosing the events to participate in to make sure he does not play too much for his body (and mind) to handle. With his improved game, especially the backhand which has become a major weapon in Roger's game, he has become even more tough to beat than before. In the absence of Andy Murray, Kei Nishikori, with Novak Djokovic and Rafa Nadal complaining about injuries, he will be the favourite to defend his Australian Open title.
It is good to see that Belinda Bencic who after many months of struggle with a wrist injury, is playing great tennis again. She started to play in smaller tournaments at the end of last season and continued to play very well in the Hopman Cup. Despite her defeat to Kerber in the final Team Switzerland were able to win the title thanks to their solid play in the mixed doubles against Kerber and Zverev. If the Hopman Cup results are anything to go by it should be another very successful season for Roger Federer, as well as good comeback for Bencic and Kerber. Zverev after a very successful 2017 will have a lot to prove and many ranking points to defend. The NextGen star won 5 titles last season including two Masters 1000 titles, in Rome and Montreal
