"Met de mond vol tanden staan"
Harry Potter en de Vuurbeker
Met de mond vol tanden staan = standing with your mouth full of teeth = not knowing what to say.
The precise origin of this Dutch expression is unknown, but probably comes from the fact that with a full mouth one cannot speak.
"Hij volgde Dolleman naar zijn kantoortje. Dolleman deed de deur dicht en keek Harry met zowel zijn magische als zijn gewone oog aan. ‘Dat was heel netjes van je, Potter,’ zei Dolleman kalm. Harry stond met zijn mond vol tanden; dat was wel het laatste wat hij verwacht had. ‘Ga zitten,’ zei Dolleman.”
Harry Potter en de Vuurbeker, Hoofdstuk 20: De Eerste Opdracht
van J.K. Rowling (2000), vertaald door Wiebe Buddingh.
“He followed Moody into his office. Moody closed the door behind them and turned to look at Harry, his magical eye fixed upon him as well as the normal one. ‘That was a very decent thing you just did, Potter,’ Moody said quietly. Harry didn't know what to say; this wasn't the reaction he had expected at all. "Sit down," said Moody.” Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Chapter 20: The First Task
by J.K. Rowling (2000)
#GIFsmetHarry is a series of animated GIFs each based on a Dutch saying or expression and the scene in Harry Potter in which it occurs. Representing the sayings in this way helps me to remember them as I read Harry Potter to learn Dutch. The scenes are created with paper on a multi-plane animation stand in my studio in Rotterdam.
#GIFsmetHarry is a non-commercial work of fan art and not officially related to the Harry Potter books.
