English design studio Marshmallow Laser Feast wants people to explore something familiar to them, but in a new way. The project, commissioned by Abandon Normal Devices and Forestry Commission England's Forest Art Works as part of the AND Festival, invites participants to visit the Grizedale Forest in northwest England but with a new pair of eyes. The new technology—dubbed In the Eyes of the Animal—lets users see the forest in dazzling new colors, meet woodland creatures, and fly above the trees.
The team used CT scanning, lidar scanning, photogrammetry techniques, and a 360-degree aerial camera to create the high definition virtual world. To enter this alternate reality, users don black circular helmets with tufts of green grass fastened to the front. They can then soak in the splendor of the forest as if they were one of its furry inhabitants.
