Victor Cohen fixes the ephemeral relationships, metaphors, and juxtapositions of the street on film and paper using traditional cameras and darkroom techniques. Based in Queens, New York, he bears witness to the street's infinite tiny interactions, without intrusion, to find a jaded city's most candid moments.
These works are not images of people. They are emotions I have witnessed, they are the finished product of the city-factory, they are the marbles tumbling through the maze. A city is a distillate of power relations and social forces and I can only hope to bottle up a drop of it at a time. In this time when Mars' sins have been laid bare, I have tried to choose compositions in which Venus dominates, challenges, and forms the crux of the image while retaining her humanity and agency.
