It wasn't till I moved away,
that I realized I missed my home;
I guess it happens that way.
My favorite memory of it was one day
when I decided to wander around
in order to keep my boredom at bay.
The city was not large but always
busy, an endless parade of people
whether with purpose or left astray.
Down the street I began my escape
from my uneventful, uninspired
& rather lonesome day.
Along a certain wall was sprayed
the words 'do not follow, but do not
take charge; simply lead the way.'
I thought it a perfect little phrase
for my journey, but to whom?, I thought, 'am I leading & which way?'
I continued along without abate,
when my feet crushed something
not meant to be thrown away.
It was in fact an unfinished serenade, written on a leaf, the letters poked through with what seemed a blade.
I read it & thought with some dismay
the heartbreak & sorrow expressed in it
I could never convey.
I continued on with a curious haste, suddenly feeling a cold chill as if I was being followed by a Wraith.
A self-deprecating laugh escaped
my lips & I admit to feeling like I had awoken from a dream state.
& yes, my eyes opened to a display
from my window; a view of my
beloved Crown City at midday.
