Are you writing from the heart?
Are you putting on the clothes that you want to wear?
Are you happy with the person you see in the mirror when you brush your teeth?
Are you spending your time on things that are precious to you?
Even when no one likes it?
Even when there's no one to tell you that you are beautiful?
Even when others are silent when you show something that is precious to you?
John Berger once said: "A woman is always accompanied, except when quite alone, and perhaps even then, by her own image of herself."
A statement that holds much truth I believe, but it is a sad truth. This image of ourselves often gets in the way of who we really are. (And I wonder of this only applies to women)
When I started painting these paintings I was inspired by one line out of a Sufjan Stevens song: ‘Are you writing from the heart?’
I kept thinking about this and wondered: Am I writing from the heart?
I don’t think anyone can tell what is inside my heart. It does not speak, it does not write, it does not create on its own.
It needs me. My body, my mind, everything of me in order to communicate.
And its greatest quality is that it is entirely itself. It is not affected by the voices in my head or by anything outside of me. It is just what it is.
It reminds me of little children. They’d do anything to make their heart happy. They are entirely themselves.
We have that same heart still inside us today. Even when you're in your eighties. It is the sign of life. The sign of your life.
So, listen to it, stop ignoring what it tells you and do the (crazy) things that make it beat faster.
Write from the heart.
The Dance Part is the name I give to all my creative work. I paint, photograph, draw and create all the time, I can't help myself :)
The Dance Part is based in Wageningen, The Netherlands.
