Welcome to the New World
Moments of clarity were becoming further and further apart. At least today he had woken and knew his name and that he had to go to the coast, but for whatever reason this he could not remember.
As he made his way down the road he took in the scene that surrounded him. Cars were strewn across the road and the pavement as if dropped by a giant hand in some careless act of abandonment.
Shop windows were broken and doors left open. Nobody shopped these days as there was no money to spend as nobody was able to work…he could not remember why.
Occasionally he came across dead and decaying bodies, nobody got buried, nobody remembered how !
Coming towards him was a young woman. She was dressed in pyjamas and slippers he noticed. She was muttering something unintelligible, her eyes when she looked at him were dead. Nothing was said between the pair.
This bit he did remember, the sea bank that led to the beach. He could hear the ocean, the waves lapping gently on the shore.
He lay down in the dunes and listened to the ocean lapping against the shoreline. In front of him he could make out the broken wind turbines and occasionally he could hear the rusty blades grinding. Now they produced nothing only pollution in the sea.
As he lay back he could see another drone flying overhead. The white trail that it left formed the perfect grid pattern that others had already laid. The trails were slowly merging to form the characteristic white haze.
He remembered what he had been told ages ago. “These are vapour trails” or” they keep us all safe from the effects of the sun”…..that was before his mind was taken !
