Such a coincidence. I was just thinking of aiki-jujutsu earlier this week. My friend R, (a good friend in law school who now lives here in the Bay Area too) messaged me tonight with a couple of photos from when our sensei's teacher came to town. (I hardly ever see him these days. Mostly stay in touch with Instagram. He posts muscle cars and boats, I post horses and kids.) Our teacher retired or we'd still be doing it. I normally wore a gi to practice in, but I'm wearing a hakama here because our sensei wanted us to dress formally for the visit. (The grogs in gis are visiting from a different school). The master, Don, is about to fling me to the ground even though I'm grabbing him.
Takeda Sokaku defined aiki in the following way:
“The secret of aiki is to overpower the opponent mentally at a glance and to win without fighting."
Notice Don wasn't in shape to fight in the traditional sense. He had no need. It was amazing to watch, and an honor to study with him a few times.
