I had a bunch of stuff to talk about last night, but Ello's server was down, so I just read for 30 seconds before I realized I was impossibly sleepy and went to sleep.
But today, quite a day. Another one of those days where things look like they're not going to turn out well, and then they do. Without me having to do much at all.
The office manager I'm filling in for has been slightly obstructive. Not so much that I could call her on anything, but enough that it was clear she wasn't giving me much of what I'd need to do her job effectively. I don't have all the passwords I need, she promised a key to office then never gave me one, not being very responsive to questions, not sitting down with me to make sure I had everyone's contact info, and the list goes on.
Last Thursday was supposed to be her last day, but she came in Friday. All fine and good. I arrived this morning at 8:15. No one there, and no way to get in, because, no key. So I got coffee. I survived.
The computer I've been using is in the reception space. Right next to the controller, who probably didn't love sharing his space for two weeks. Before the manager left, I asked if I could use her office. I'd kept waiting for her to suggest it, make things easier, but, no. She grandly offered to let me use her phone in her absence, but with the bulk of my work on the computer where my email, etc, is set up, it didn't make a lot of sense.
This morning, I realized I could just move the CPU I'd been using into her office. So I did. I also dusted, because the place was filthy. It took me quite a while to do it all. She had a few personal items (mugs, notebooks, etc, that I placed in a box for her return.)
Well, she came in around 12, before I'd had a chance to put everything together after dusting. She looked shocked! I was really surprised at how surprised she was. Then I immediately felt bad and hoped I hadn't overstepped. She left the office.
I went to lunch to give her a chance to come to terms with it. And I sent her an email telling her I hoped I handed overstepped my limits. Then, I got cc'd on an email from the principal, who's on vacation in Costa Rica. He was pissed at the facilities manager for "changing offices". I immediately took ownership of the decision, apologized, and said we'd put it back right away.
He responded to me, cc'ing the office manager that I was supposed to use the office. I think somehow someone had thought the facilities manager was moving in, and called the boss. (Pit of vipers?) He wasn't changing offices for himself, he just moved the computer for me. And, I think the office manager got a scolding for not setting me up in the office upon her departure. According to the boss' email, she was supposed to help me this afternoon, but never showed up again.
I've been giving her the benefit of the doubt. It'd be hard to let go of the reins. It was highly unprofessional to behave so passive-aggressively. However, I do get how she must be feeling.
I had a few bad moments there mid-day, but all's well that ends well. Thank goodness for my new positve outlook. I could really have been sweating bullets.
I ran into a bunch of friends/neighbors when I was walking the dog after work and told them the story. They were all indignant on my behalf. But in a laughing and joking way. So nice to have people care about me! The day ended well, with the opportunity to hang out and vent with friends, and then the kids absolutely loving the dinner I made them.
I delcare this day a success.
The enitire day, this skit kept running through my mind. It was almost exactly like that!
