So psyched! As part of my new venture, I want to play to my strengths, which include bringing people together to create an experience. I have a lot of ideas. In addition to the horses, I want to get people out in nature. To slow down and meditate by the creek, or take a full-moon hike, or just walk and feel their connection to Earth. I always feel the very most at home when I'm out by myself as far away from other people as I can get. I know a lot of people who are intimidated by the thought of getting out there on their own and exploring. I grew up playing in the woods, swimming in rivers and lakes, and hiking and camping. And those are still some of my favorite things to do. (Believe it or not, many of my friends who knew me in the pre-cave-dwelling time of before the last decade, have told me I should have been a park ranger. I think I would have preferred that, but water under the bridge there.)
So, in addition to working with the horses, I've been thinking about how to incorporate all those things I love into workshops and other events. I think the subtitle of the business will be just Experiential Learning, with horses being one category, and retreats and workshops others.
So, for my first retreat, I remembered that I have access to 40 acres of undeveloped land on Maui. Most likely, have to ask my friend M first, but I'm sure he'll be on board with it, especially as I'll, of course, pay a fee. I hadn't asked him yet because I needed to get the head-liner, so to speak, on board. I'd sent the email last week, and didn't hear back, so I thought she may not be interested. But today, I heard that she is interested!
She's a friend of mine who's an intuitive psychic and makes a good living at it with private readings, as well as workshops all over the U.S, and Europe, and on-line courses as well. She has clients who would be willing to pay the fees to have a "glamping" experience on Maui, organized my moi. And I'm sure I'll be able to sell it here in the Bay Area too. I proposed a 5-day retreat, with a workshop by J, as well as plenty of time to relax and settle into the great sub-tropical outdoors. I can, I'm sure, scare up a yoga instructor (I have other connections on Maui too), as well as guided excursions snorkeling, hiking and whatever else I think of.
I'm excellent at car camping. Believe me, you want to camp with me. While I like backpacking, I excel at car camping. I'm also excellent at organizing things like that, from planning and cooking the meals, to renting the equipment, to making sure the insurance is in place, etc. I've organized things like that for 25 or so people a few times. (I'm thinking 10-12 for this.) I know I can do it, because I have. Just for fun. But in this case, I plan to make money doing what I love doing. Those will literally be some happy campers.
So, I just have to talk to M now, and fingers crossed, I can put it on my website as the first planned retreat. Probably for some time in September, because that's when I like Hawaii the best. Good weather and the water's at summer temperatures still. Wish me luck. It would be ridiculously cool. Will be? I need to start changing my attitude to "yes, this is going to happen. Well, all I have to do is hear from M, and I can get started right away.
And in the meantime, I can develop programs here with the horses. Yay! However this works out, just having a website and marketing it will make it at least a possibility. Right now, keeping it all quiet-like, it won't go anywhere. But honestly, I wasn't ready before now. I had everything I needed. Horses, two years worth of training in experiential learning, enthusiasm for the concept, but I didn't have the self-confidence to market it. I got that from doing the commercial lending. I learned I'm great at networking and sales, and that people like me and what I have to say. I hope I can get people to gain as much as I have from spending time with horses and in nature.
Wish me luck.
