VENUS DE MILO
Since it’s discovery on the island of Melos in 1820, the graceful statue of Venus de Milo has intrigued and fascinated. Its poise reflecting gracefulness and elegance. Despite its classical Hellenistic feel - the spiral composition, the positioning in space, and the fall of the drapery over the hips - what fascinated the most is the mysterious character that inspired this great piece of artwork. For hundreds of years, historians wanted to find out who she is. Is she Aphrodite who was often portrayed half-naked? Or the sea goddess Amphitrite who was venerated on Milo? These are some of the questions asked about the mysterious statue along the years. This fascinating sculpture is currently exhibited at the Louvre Museum in Paris.
