Food City... Mesa, AZ
Mesa, Arizona has one of the great strips of commercial Americana. Running up and down Main Street are some of the last remnants of some of the great American neon signs. The Sunland and Starlite Motels (complete with neon divers and a big ass sun), the closed down Buckhorn baths (with a big buck on top of one of the larger neon signs) and old supermarkets like Food City.
It's rare to find an old blue and white supermarket as cool as Food City anymore, but that's the sort of thing you'll find on Main Street in Mesa.
It's even rarer to find an even cooler matching blue and white car parked out front. I shot this car for a while with my pal @jgoody. Eventually the guy who owned the car came back and we had a chance to talk to him for a bit. He wore shades and was every bit as cool as his car was. I made this portrait of him here: http://goo.gl/Y2v1pj
After shooting the outside of Food City I made my way inside to shoot for a while. Shooting the inside of a supermarket with a DSLR inevitably raises suspicion and I didn't get to shoot as long as I'd have liked before being cornered by the manager who didn't understand why a photographer from San Francisco would be interested in the way he stacked his cans in Mesa, Arizona. http://goo.gl/8lxcIJ
If you haven't seen the William Eggleston documentary "In the Real World" yet, I cannot recommend it enough. You can watch it for free on Youtube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCHZvXBEYKc Eggleston gets told he can't take photos in a supermarket as well, around the 6:30 mark in the documentary. I got a good laugh out of the fact that a guy who has sold photographs for hundreds of thousands of dollars and whose work hangs in major museums all over the world would be told by a grocery store clerk that he can't take photos in the store.
Later on we came back to Food City to make some more photographs at night, when the store was every bit as glamourous. http://goo.gl/b5ZXXD
