I am Thom van Dijk a Dutch artist residing in Utecht. As an artist, I study the destructive traits of the modern human as well as his stupidity. Why do we cling to habits and thought processes that destroy us and our surroundings? Stubbornness, mindless consumption and bad habits. Our brain has deliberate blind spots, optical as well as psychological. One of its cleverest tricks is convincing us there are no blind spots. We are left continually justifying our own perceptions and convictions, even if they aren’t correct. This phenomenon of thinking reality is as we experience it, is called naïve realism. Through my work, I try to expose this naïve realism and portray the true, inner self. My paintings aim to show people’s actual thought processes. They are figurative paintings wherein characters, objects and places are formed in an almost cartoonesque, fictitious way. Yet they are graphic enough to confront the observer, just like naïve reality is fiction experienced as something real. My paintings often find their origin in psychological theory, anecdotes of people with certain delusions or profoundly stupid historical events.
