“Being-with Smartphones” — This is the title of an essay I'm currently finishing. I explore a connection between the philosophy of technology and the philosophy of the self. The focus is on seeking to understand and assess the impact of smartphone-use in small-group settings. By drawing upon the existentialist claim that an individual creates her own identity or self, and the Heideggerian phenomenon of being-with, I argue that smartphone-use tends to fracture sociality in small groups in ways that are detrimental to individual self-creation.
I'll be presenting a version of this essay at the Morris Museum (in Morristown NJ), on March 25, 2019.
