Today in Game Design. It has been a hard few weeks for the audio team. We've had bad builds go out the door, we had things that should have never gotten to the public get to the public, and annoy the shit out of them, and when we tried to fix it, we actually introduced an entirely new annoying issue.
This issue has been dubbed "the bonkening." You see, I have a "general error" sound that is used in the game for communicating, "this is bad."
We have been asked over the last year or so to put error sounds on all kinds of stuff you just shouldn't, you. just. shouldn't. and we would try it out, and say, nope, and never let it get out into the live game. Well, accidentally one of those sounds did get out. Basically, if you are triggering your abilities and spamming the key for the ability you will get an audio call Ability_NotReady between casts, and you can get this five or six times in just a couple seconds, and it was so annoying, we knew it was, and the public found out when it got patched into the game on accident.
I still have no idea how it got out the door. Anyway, it did, and the community began calling for my head and saying we were stupid assholes, which, you know, fair enough, I guess. Anyway, we put in a hotfix and got the sound call out of the game and everything is good.
As a joke back at the players, I made them a ring tone of the bonkening and we just released it out on our forums to the public. It's one of our iconic abilities firing off, followed by a series of bonks.
It makes ME feel better, anyway.
