We are caretakers of impermanent things.
When we try to insist on ownership we declare things or ideas immortal and linked to ourselves. We narcissistically cling to our infant visions of being all powerful to fight against the awakening of consciousness and the knowledge of time and the realization that all things (as we understand them) seem to end. At least all things humans are and own will pass.
Evil seems to come from fighting this. In stories about people trying to achieve immortality there are always only two options, turning away or the corruption of the soul. I think about some of the big stories of our time, Star Wars, Harry Potter, and The Lord of the Rings. They all turn on the evil of trying to assume immortality.
The people who turn away become the most powerful in the end. The see it but they let it go.
