We are sick but in interesting ways. This is a bit of inevitable illness in itself.
The continuing sin of civilization is the lack of balance between the holistic and analytic. Modernism made the holistic account for itself to the analytic. Post modernism split them in two and put no value, outside of lip service, to the holistic.
I don't see Postmodernism as truly the revolution it wants (wanted?) to be. The real lines of the battle it wants (wanted) to fight were not on lines of gender or race or sexuality but of a much deeper conflict between the roles of the holistic and analytic. Race and class conflict are symptoms of a deeper pathology, a split of the self and the soul.
Postmodernism, in denying aesthetics (the voice and heart of the holistic), forces the sins of the parents to visit the children. It denies the image the power of its own form of truth. The holistic has a truth of a different quality than the analytic. Its truth is formed in metaphor and dreaming is its thought process. The resulting postmodern disease looks different but still strikes at our souls.
But maybe postmodernism is wrong in an interesting way, just as modernism is wrong in an interesting way. I hope what I can add will also be wrong in an interesting way. And I hope this dies away and whatever art I make is larger than the theories I have for it (in the same way a parent hopes, and dreads, their child doing better than them and, by doing so, making the parent look foolish).
