Slöjd och hemslöjd, the craft and handicraft movement opened many doors for beauty to everyone in the Nordic countries. It’s the Nordic version of the arts and crafts movement. Föreningen för Svensk Hemslöjd, the National association of Swedish handicraft societies founded 1899 by Lilli Zickerman 1858-1949, with protection of prince Eugen 1865-1949 (of Sweden, duke of Närke). Between 1904 and 1912 around 20 handicraft societies were started up all over Sweden.
Slöjd (sloyd) also known as educational sloyd, is a system of more advanced handicrafts as a part of compulsory school curriculum started by Uno Cygnaeus 1810-1888 in Finland 1865 (at the time the automonous Grand duchy of Finland, Russian empire era). Slöjd, sloyd of textile, metal and wood is still taught in schools in Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark.
