I am about to take a very unpopular stance and it will probably destroy my already non-existent photography career.I think these "Best Of" popularity contests that local free papers all over the country do has gotten completely out of hand. The idea that one band is better than other is just as silly as trying to say Sprinkles Cupcakes on Lexington Ave are superior to the cupcakes at Butter Lane.
First and foremost, there is no way in hell that Sprinkles can out bake Butter Lane! That aside, these bullshit Best Of campaigns are just about getting web traffic and selling ad space. You got some editor curating the local music as if he/she is some kind of tastemaker.
The show last night was so freaking amazing there is no way in hell that one band is better than another. Máscaras just crushed it and so did Divers. The Domestics, my favorite of the evening were as good as I had ever seen them. Come to think of it, most of the bands that were in the running for Best New Band are such stellar bands, and to crown one band King is beyond silly. I don't vote for best of anything, I find popularity contests insulting. They are just put together so the local papers can garner some media attention. Especially in Portland, the music writers, photographers and musicians are all homies. This is great for everybody, but really can people not in the scene or in the know really trust music reviews? I say no, not when the everybody is so tight with each other.
