They stood there on the bridge. Staring. Waiting.
The darkness stared back at them as the wind howled against the metal arches. The city was blurred by the light fog of the night. There wasn't much to see there now anyway. Yellow flickering points in the distance. Occasionally one would sway and turn like a firefly, direction less before dying, never to be seen again. They stood there, commiserating the loss of another to the deep, deep darkness.
The bridge rumbled beneath them. The two of them ran towards the end nearest the city, dodging pot holes and cracks in the road. As they approached the end the cracks turned to iron and the pebbles of asphalt grew into bricks and before too long they were in the centre of a building only just standing. They didn't see what was following them. Then again, they never really did.
They felt it though. The eyes, never moving and constantly searing. The body, hulking, sleek, and moving without weight. Destructive in it's wake.
They slowed to a near stop and inched to a corner of the remains that still had enough structure to create a covering for which to hide themselves.
It loomed on the other side of their barrier, slowly approaching them. One of them looked out. They saw nothing. As the figure retreated to cover it turned to the other, it's eyes opening, starting at the top and working their way down. The figure started to consume the volume of the space the two had been occupying moments before. The second figure stood there, slowed by terror, each blink taking an eternity.
For an eternity the figure stayed there, the darkness hiding its body.
The darkness left no shadow, it left nothing behind.
