I became obsessed with this ATM machine. It hit me out of no where that the ambiguity of technology is very reflective to a modern society (in the U.S and in my opinion anyway). This ATM machine is a lone solder on watch. It stands as the world rushes by and it is powerless to interact with it on its terms. However it only becomes noticed when someone wants something from it. They get their cash or bank balance and then move on, erasing the encounter from their memory. For a moment the ATM is being interacted with, it holds the users attention and gladly gives up what is requested of it out of gratitude for the attention. Then the little guy is returned to the cold, alone, and forced again to stand and stare at the people rushing by.
It is present and yet very very alone no matter how many people there are around it. It is separated from other like pieces of technology by the challenges of immobility and by other creations of technology. Cold, alone, isolated in the presence of others, and lonely on a level that only few truly understand.
Makes my heart hurt a bit when I think about it that way.
