Kalsarikännit is the Finnish concept of drinking at home alone in your underwear. In other words, it’s the perfect catch-all euphemism to reclaim those weekend nights when you didn’t have plans anyways. There is basically couple of reasons why this concept is popular. First, the climate in Finland is pretty awful most of the year: dark and cold. Who would like to step out from his/her cozy warm home, when there is a snowstorm out, freezing as hell and no hint of the sun? Secondly, Finnish state’s alcohol policy plays a role in this. It’s way more expensive to go out for drinks in the bar, compared to doing it at home. And maybe thirdly, which is kind of characteristic to Finns: it’s of course lot of fun to socialise and get drunk with your friends, but it’s totally ok to stay home too and have fun just by yourself, with no need to talk with anyone else.
