Here in Cascadia, the salal is beginning to ripen. Salal berries have a long history of being used by people here.
I'm making fruit leather (more like dried berry cakes)
Above is the plant with unripened berries
Harvested a few, cut the berries off of the stem, washed & put in the oven on lowest setting with door open to dry,
Then I mashed them a bit, added a little lemon (I LOVE lemon) & dried some more
Mashed some more, drying well, forming cake,
Very, very yummy, nutritious, & free (though it may not look like much)
Careful though! It stains!
