2018 has been a horrible year for creators and anyone whose work is related to sexuality. Patreon has taken down the page of sex workers, and censored hardly all the others, Instagram keeps on suppressing sex workers accounts, and now Tumblr is deleting pretty much everything loosely related to nudity.
@afourchamberedheart Patreon has been taken down, @letagparfaitetagparfait ’s one too, pretty much all sex workers, nude models, lots of my friends and inspiring creators as well, summoned to go or deleted straight away. It's no surprise we are all trying to move to Twitter and to Ello, but we're doing so knowing it will probably happen again and we'll be banned again.
There is so much more than just a porn ban. It's mostly caused by SESTA / FOSTA, but it goes further. So much more at stake than just puritanism and payment processors rules - it’s about freedom of expression, censorship, stigma, control. It’s cutting funds for so many marginalized people, making them silent and invisible again, trying to take away their voice and agency. It's making queer voices disappear. It's erasing contestation of the whole heteronormativity and patriarchy, it's pushing us every day further in the margins. Sex workers and supporters have been talking about it already these past months, trying to warn everyone on what’s happening and what will happened, and we are in the middle of this. It needs repeating : anything linked to sexuality, and sex work, is always precarious, and threatened. However, to quote @afourchamberedheart : Media about sex is as important, valuable and worthy as any other work we create and consume.
Please, listen and support sex workers, especially - they are often marginalized people, stigmatized, silenced, despised, ignored. Like the canary in the coal mine, always the first, under the false name of censorship and moral, to fall under oppressive laws that curb freedom. But it's already affecting your privacy and individual rights as civilians as well. Be aware.
