Shamis McGIllin is a Fashion Photographer and Multimedia Artist known by the stage name 'MONARX' and is based out of New York City. McGillin is a young artist with an extensive background in the industry working as a fashion photographer, producer, art director, retoucher, and stylist. Starting his career in Chicago underground nightlife as an entertainer and event photographer, Shamis has been taking his unique flirtation with the avant garde and grittiness of queer nightlife and marrying it to his commercial and editorial shoots to create a hypnogogic body of work that brings fantasy into reality while bringing fresh faces to the mainstream.
Shamis is an alumnus of Columbia College Chicago graduating May 2016 with a BA in Photography and Fashion Business with a concentration in fashion photography.
During his residence in Chicago he worked as a content creator for The Chicago Sun-Times and their alt-weekly zine "The Chicago Reader", Chicago's FRANK Magazine, and as test shooter for many modeling agencies including FORD and FACTOR/CHOSEN. Alongside founder Nick Marchese, McGillin also worked as a designer photographer for the indie renewal clothing brand Entropy Threads.
Shamis currently lives in New York City and has been featured and interviewed in Attitude Magazine UK, Off Kilter Magazine, and Dynasty Podcasts. He just finished interning for Untitled Magazine and Untiled Space Gallery in TriBeCa while freelancing as an editorial photographer and being active in NYC nightlife as a performance artist and entertainer. Shamis was recently signed to the new queer modeling agency ZANDWAGON based out of NYC and is represented by Kayvon Zand and Debora Spencer as a model, photographer, and live performer.
