Last night I was watching a stupid Netflix movie with my son and I got into it. It's an Avengers cartoon that takes place in an alternate future where the kids of the Avengers are the main characters, Ultron won and took over the world, and Tony Stark is a retired badass who is the kid's caretaker. None of this really bothered me or interested me before (my kid has watched it before, as kids do). One of the characters is Thor's daughter. In fact, she's the only female character (their age). All the other kids' parents dies, but her father, Thor, just went back to Asgard. I became emotionally invested in this character as of this viewing, for some stupid reason.
At the end of the film, my son held me and said, "Mommy, did you know that Thor's real? Yeah, my daddy told me all about him. But, I don't think Thor's alive on this planet anymore."
I choked back some tears because somebody I used to know and I still love very much was nicknamed "Redneck Thor" and heavily associated with the character for me, and this person passed away at a young age several years ago.
"Yeah, baby, I know," I told my son.
