@davel51 your portrait of the survivor of the mining disaster reminded me of a day I spent at a tractor pull in rural Michigan. All the farms had gone belly-up and the stands held a handful of bent and grizzled old farmers. This fellow was driving his grandfather's 1939 International Harvester against a bunch of similar vintage Fords and such.
This fellow was in the stands. He'd been sidelined by a mash-up of medical and financial issues, no longer had a tractor to drive, but he was ticking off notes in his little notebook each time someone else drove.
