Sunrise at the top of Mount Fuji last summer. While climbing to the top throughout the night I felt my bones chilled by the wind, muscles burned by the slopes, lungs stressed by the altitude, and skin pelted by rain and hail. As twilight broke at the summit to reveal cloud coverage, the hundreds of people hoping to see the sunrise stood silent. The clouds lifted and the tension broke with the sun. These moments of anticipation--the tension and release--are what give outdoor adventures meaning to me.
