This month is #hcmarchmakermonth on @handmadeconnect, so I thought I would join in!
My name is Carissa Macpherson, and I am the face behind Whipstitch Wing Creations. I create an endless variety of yarn art (jewellery, clothing, toys, home decor... you name it!) using techniques such a crochet and macrame. I am 32 this year, and I cannot get over how much my life has transformed over the past decade.
I was a studious little thing as a child, and spent much of my life gravitating towards academics. I met my hubby at uni, and we married when I was 19. At 20 years of age, I graduated with a Bachelor of Science from UQ, majoring in Animal Studies, & later went on to study Education. I spent four years as a Science and Maths teacher, and I loved being in the classroom. I was also addicted to the magical world of theatre, and was on the stage every chance I had.
Towards the end of my fourth year of teaching, the long hours and stress started to take their toll on my health. I eventually decided to resign, and over the next few years I tried my hand at vet nursing in QLD and spent some time as a Coordinator of an Out of School Hours program in WA. Neither position helped my condition, and I quickly spiralled into a very dark and scary place.
Less than a year after we had moved interstate, I suffered a severe breakdown and was diagnosed with anxiety. During my road to recovery, I discovered a new fascination with texture and colour, and my love of yarn began. I initially used crochet as a form of therapy, but after a year or so of not being able to work, I decided to start selling my items. Whipstitch Wing Creations was born on 2 December 2016. This was a massive step for me, and I am so incredibly proud of myself for taking it. I haven't looked back since.
I now work from home as a fibre artist. Much of my business consists of custom orders, and I love the new ideas and techniques that this inspires. I am meeting some amazing people and discovering a whole new side to my soul ❤. Since my diagnosis, I have had to take a step back from acting, but I have found a whole new love and therapy in pole dancing. U can follow my journey @polefanatic187 😙.
