Summer in the City
The haze tonight makes me
think of photos I've seen—
perennially polluted megacities like
Los Angeles or Beijing lost in the smog
of too many cars and industry.
All day today the north wind brought
us unwanted smoke and I wonder if
the wildfires have at last died
down on your side of the border.
Our sun was muted hours before sunset
and for that, at least, I was grateful.
It helped the temperature
drop, so crucial when everyone is
running a summertime fever.
No matter, we'll sweat it out
while trying to remain cheerful—
winter's chill will be here soon
enough, a reminder of swift time.
The one-way ticket we punched at birth.
