Whitney Sanford is a mixed media artist living in San Francisco. Points of interest and inspiration include all of art history, architecture, pattern making, censored and classic Hollywood, feminism, and travel.
I have selected these three images for the project on "Community". The first, "All" is a reference to Alphone Mucha's "Slave Epic" and a response to the political climate in the United States today. I stand with All. The second is a study of an old jazz club in San Francisco, now deceased. This was a place that allowed black performers a safe place to express their art and was a huge point of community... until that community changed. Third, this is a painting of a few ladies of the night. I loved their glamour and unapologetic behavior. The last two pieces are mixed media, which is important, because like Community, nothing is singular, nothing stands alone, not one thing is made of one thing.
