I drove into the city in the metal carapace surrounded by other similar creatures. Waiting for the light to turn I was drawn to a woman crossing the street about fifty feet away. There was no particular reason to notice her.
Then as I watched her, she started to fall. In slow motion it seemed at first, as if a hand had reached up through the asphalt and grabbed an ankle. Time suddenly accelerated. Her body twisted and slammed into the pavement.
I was three or four cars back. Certainly too far away to do something.
She lay motionless for a moment in front of a hulking waiting bus. Someone rushed from the sidewalk to help the stunned woman to her feet. The light turned green. I was absolved.
