The first step in making a knife, other than choosing your steel, is to come up with how you want it to look. At this point, things like handle materials and even the specific grind are not necessary. Although it's best to have all of these ideas together before you start, sometimes it's just best to start with one thing because your ideas may change as you go. So in other words, all we really want to be concerned with at this point is to figure out what we want as the "profile" of the knife. In any case you will want to draw this out on the steel. In this case it was very easy as I traced an existing knife that I am attempting to duplicate. So if your just starting out this may not be a bad idea, especially if the existing knife is simple in design.
