This piece was inspired by a photo of Gidra zine staff posing in protest of the exploitation of Asian-American women, and features some of us from a loose group of radical Asian artists here in Philadelphia that have been meeting since our group show titled A/Public last winter. The windows behind us on the left, middle and right represent past, present, and future. In the past panel, images from Gidra acknowledge the inspiration for the photo and the legacy of radical activism that we inherit and build upon. The present is our home of Philadelphia. The TV is the foundation of technology we've seen explode in our lifetime. The larger-than-life bonsai tree is set free of its contained body... representing wisdom, stability, growth, and discipline. Snake as a symbol of power, black cat and oranges for good luck. A crystal ball floats in front of us symbolizing the magic we posses and the future(s) we can manifest.
The emergence of this group has been so special to me and represents the first time in my life I've had the experience of being in a room full of API peers, which is an inexplicably special and healing feeling. I know I'm not the only one of us that feels this way too. I just had to celebrate us with some art!
