This artwork is about "verbal abuse." There are different forms of verbal abuse but anyone can experience it. I had been affected by this issue because I have people around me who developed depression after being exposed to such abuse. It created post-traumatic stress on them and an avalanche of emotional anguish (as you can see on the expression of the victim in my painting). It can affect every single person who is assaulted at home, school, at work or even through social media. Now that we're living in this age of technology, just one click and people can ruin other people's lives (without minding if the story is true or just a hearsay). The abusers in this painting are trying to control the victim's behavior, thoughts, and feelings by bullying her through blatantly offensive language and already gaining power over her. If the victim will not be able to conquer and overcome this abuse, she will doubt her own ability and would develop anger and hatred to ALL the people around her, and the WORLD.
This artwork was shown last July 2017 in Nunu Fine Art, Taipei, Taiwan. The theme was about connecting Filipinos to Taiwanese. The first that came to my mind is bubble tea. hihi
Filipinos' food/drinks preferences were somehow influenced by different cultures. One example is the Bubble Tea which originated from Taiwan. We cannot deny the fact that there has been a bubble tea sensation in the Philippines since it was introduced. Bubble tea somehow provides comfort whenever we face stressful situations at work or in school; and since we spend our time mostly at work and in school, it has been part of our daily routine.
My painting depicts three areas in this material world: Different faces representing ANYONE in any part of the world; facial expressions signifying EMPTINESS; and bubble tea symbolizing SENSE ENJOYMENT.
Everyone is clouded by an illusion that enjoyment is the basis of happiness in this world. You try to satisfy every sense, yet you're still not satisfied and you still crave for something more. The fact that you're body/senses are satisfied but you still feel empty inside is a manifestation that the body is not you.
We are the spirit in essence. We are spirit souls. Hence, the only thing that can satisfy us is our loving service to the Supreme.
