I created a collage style composition that consists of the following materials: tile, chenille stems, poms, stamps, and circular stickers. I decided to base my concept on the desire to create because it is a feeling I experience personally. I’ve felt this desire ever since I was a child and it has not rested since then. I chose a whimsical set of materials and objects that are reminiscent of a time when I was first being introduced to art and creation. I wanted the work to reflect on themes such as: curiosity, experimentation, growth, and discovery, which are all part of the process of creating.
The piece includes areas that are distorted to build on the subject of experimentation and growth. As a child, I was accustomed to doing whatever came naturally to me without being criticized. When I was critiqued, in a way, it distorted my view on my work. I became more conscious and knowledgeable about how to direct my work in a successful manner. I included the space stamps because they remind me of wonder. Space is a subject that opens up many possibilities due to how little we know about it, which also speaks on curiosity.
The composition is set up in a way that doesn’t make sense in real-life. It has a dreamy vibe to it because the objects are unproportionate to each other and because of the distortion. The composition is meant to be playful and pleasing to the eye. I used mostly primary colors to make the work stand out more and because it feels more child-like.
